What is a restriction/joint immobility?
A joint is defined as a structure in the human skeleton in which two bones are fitted together. Within your body you have a number of spinal facet joints, formed by the articulation of the vertebrae with one another, and a number of extremity joints, such as your shoulders, elbows, hips, knees and ankles.
When any one of these joints becomes restricted (ie: when their mobility is affected) this can have a large effect on any of the structures surrounding this joint, which in turn can lead to pain and altered function. As chiropractors we are trained to detect these restrictions and correct them by means of a chiropractic manipulation/adjustment.
What is a manipulation/adjustment?
A chiropractic manipulation is defined as a high velocity low amplitude thrust, applied to a joint in the body in order to correct or restore motion. It is a painless, pleasant experience.
During this thrust pressure builds up within the joint in the form of small gas bubbles. These gas bubbles pop, which makes the characteristic ‘cracking’ sound associated with chiropractic treatment. No bones are being broken, we can assure you!
